Exam Success
The challenge for the school in 2009 was to consolidate recent progress and endeavour to push further for even better levels of pupil achievement.
The percentage of pupils achieving 5A*-Cs at GCSE has made spectacular progress over recent years with 40% in 2004, 51% in 2006 and 57% in 2009. This has been achieved by a combination of more appropriate curriculum provision, a sharp focus on the quality of teaching and learning and intervention and support work with pupils to ensure they achieve their potential.
Pupil progress is monitored closely starting with close links with feeder Middle Schools. This aspect of the school's work has been further strengthened with the creation of a pyramid-wide Educational Improvement Partnership (EIP) and the recent establishment of a Federation between three of the schools, with Whitcliffe Mount playing the lead role.
Individual targets are set for GCSE and Post-16 study and these are closely tracked throughout the year. These are communicated to parents via the student planner along with termly effort and attainment grades. Each year group also has at least one progress/parent consultation evening, review days and a written report per year.
The school has put a lot of teacher time and energy into further development of Teaching and Learning strategies and we have also restructured our Options system in Year 9, in order to give pupils greater choice and flexibility about the subjects they will study for GCSE.
The school has had Business and Enterprise Specialist status since 2004 and this has enabled us to enhance teaching personnel and increase levels of resources to support learning. The school now has 12 dedicated ICT suites and over 30 interactive whiteboards for classroom use.
