Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care courses are delivered by two dedicated and enthusiastic teachers. Our current Year 11 will be undertaking the Edexcel GCSE in Health and Social Care with our new Year 10 students beginning the BTEC Technical Award in Health and Social Care. Students consistently achieve well in the subject, are engaged and enjoy researching the different elements of health and social care practice.

The department recorded fantastic results in 2017 with 72% of students achieving A*-C Grades.

The Curriculum

Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care offers the opportunity to have a greater understanding of who you are, the changes that you will go through during your life and why you change. It allows you to investigate the interaction between people and how we communicate. Through studying Health and Social Care you will learn the knowledge and skills to continue your education in this sector and also follow a career path for yourself in medicine, teaching, childcare, youth work, family support, social work or veterinary jobs. You will be able to develop your research skills through the use of specific textbooks designed to complement the course, and through the use of the internet to support your research.

GCSE Health and Social Care is taken with the Edexcel examinations board, and is comprised of two units - Unit 1: Understanding Personal Development and Relationships (40%, Examination – 1 hour 15 minutes) and Unit 2: Exploring Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision (60%, Controlled Assessment).

The BTEC Technical Award in Health and Social Care is comprised of three components: two internally assessed and one externally. The components include Human Lifespan Development (30% - internally assessed assignments), Health and Social Care Services and Values (30% - internally assessed assignments) and Health and Wellbeing (40% - externally assessed task).

The Health and Social Care department offers after-school catch-up and revision sessions to students. Please click here for details of our Achieve timetable.

Revision Websites

Using revision websites is a quick and easy way to revise and can make a significant difference in overall
results. Although there are not many dedicated Health and Social Care revision websites, many mainstream
revision sites will offer Health and Social Care sections.
Gojimo can be downloaded as an app or accessed via the internet. It is a great website that provides
Health and Social Care quizzes that can be done on the go, anytime and anywhere.
GetRevising is fantastic for accessing revision materials that have been created and shared by other
students. The website also allows you to create your own revision timetable, resources and access past
papers.
The Edexcel website publishes past papers and mark schemes that are a useful revision tool. The papers
can be easily printed out and completed at home and the mark schemes are easy to follow if you wish
to assess your work.
Edmodo
Edmodo has proven to be a useful educational and networking tool for many of the Heath and Social Care
students. It is free to create an account if you have not done so already. Please contact your Health and
Social Care teacher for more details on how to join a group.
Revision Guides
Revision guides and workbooks are available from Pearson Education. The books are marketed as BTEC
materials, but as there is a lot of crossover between the two courses can still be used for GCSE revision.
Books are available for purchase from Amazon.

Controlled Assessment
Controlled assessment catch-up sessions are available every Monday and Wednesday after school.
YouTube Revision
YouTube is another great resource for Health and Social Care revision. Please find below details of
channels which may be useful for your exam or controlled assessment. A good tip is to like and
subscribe to channels and videos in order to revisit the clips in the future.
