Poetry is Courage Winners

As part of their Literature studies in English, students across the school have been creating their own poetry based on the theme of 'Courage'. Students studied the work of a range of poets, and then created a personal response to the task set - create a poem entitled 'Courage'.

Mrs Otway entered the poems of 60 students into the 'Poetry is Courage' competition organized through the Huddersfield Literature Festival which took entries from all of North Kirklees, and is delighted to announce that 4 students have finalists in the competition, with one student, Hannah Hudson winning the competition outright! The four finalists were presented with a poster of their poetry, a copy of which will also be displayed around Huddersfield town centre, and Hannah was invited to record her poem for the Huddersfield Examiner 'talking newspaper'. Well done girls!

I am Her by Hannah Hudson

I am her

Her courage is motivating

She moves with breathless elegance

Yet her footsteps leave complex blemishes

On the face of the Earth

I am her

She does not sit at the back of the bus

Or cower to extremists and racists

Her fearlessness is bulletproof

And she intimidates all uneducated prejudice

That question her credibility or drive

I am her

She carries her lamp

And guides all worriers astray

With impelling blossoms budding in the

Dark locks of her curios head

So thank you Frida, Malala, Florence

Emmeline and Rosa

Thanks to you

We are she

And I am her
