" Little did I think when starting school at Whitcliffe Mount fifty years ago that I’d be contributing to the school’s Century of Fame website as the Children’s Laureate. But here I am half a century later doing what, for me, is the best job in the world – drawing pictures and making up stories. It’s quite funny because it’s exactly what I used to do for fun all those years ago, and I look back gratefully to the influence of my memorable English teacher Frank Beckworth, and Art teacher Albert Thornton. Thank you!

Wendy Holden
Wendy was born and grew up in Cleckheaton and attended Whitcliffe Mount.  Her first job was on the arts magazine ‘Appollo’.  In 1992 she moved to ‘Harpers Bazaar’ where she worked for three years until she joined the ‘Sunday Telegraph’.  In 1997 she became the editor of ‘Tatler’ and then moved on to the Mail on Sunday’s You magazine which she left in 2000 to concentrate on her writing.

" A good teacher is the beginning of everything and I had some wonderful teachers at Whitcliffe Mount to whom I will always be grateful."

Wendy Holden
