I was a teacher appointed to teach English, French, History and later needlework.
The 32 years of working at Whitcliffe Mount were most enjoyable and I remember many special occasions.
I still keep in touch with lots of pupils and former staff and was pleased to be invited to open the new library extension in 2001.
Very best wishes and I look forward to celebrating the school's centenary in 2009/10.
Iris Holt - teacher: 1949 - 1981
It’s now almost nine years since I joined Whitcliffe Mount – in January 2001. That was hard – starting mid academic year. I’d started at my previous two schools in September – much easier. I remember I had taken a pay cut and increase my teaching commitments greatly to take up a sideways move post as Assistant Headteacher at Whitcliffe because I wanted to work at Whitcliffe Mount. Having initially worked for thirteen years in a 13 – 18 school and then moved for 8 years to 11 – 18, it was more than a great shock returning to 13 – 18. I missed the younger ones! It was a big surprise to meet up with Mrs Wormald again, we had been at school together (Mrs Wormald was a year above me) and we had trained to teach at the same college. It was also good to meet and work with Mrs Barugh again - we had worked together in my first school in Leeds.
The nine years have flown. There have been some hard times but many good times. Some of my enjoyable memories include:
- Persuading Mr Davis to cancel lessons to allow the whole school to watch the World Cup (and providing bacon butties for all in the DSA)
- Whole school reward visits (always relaxed and good fun)
- Introducing the wonders of Bromcom (and now it’s gone!)
- Last summer’s whole school Healthy Choices day and summer barbeque (the sunniest day of the year?!)
- Christmas and end of summer term celebration assemblies (when we’ve all got the school team spirit)
- Developing community links with Turnsteads residents – what wonderful people!
- 2009’s Remembrance Assemblies – a new tradition, I hope
- Enjoying ‘Whitcliffe’s got Talent’ (and there is so much talent amongst pupils and staff)
- Teaching Mr McKirgan and Mr Loxam!!!!
I’m sure the Centenary Celebrations will also provide very happy memories for staff and pupils.
Mrs Janet Stanley - Deputy Headteacher: 2001 - Present
My first teaching post was at WM(G)S which turned comprehensive in 1973, the year the school leaving age was raised to 16. The local community was resistant to the transition from an 11-18 grammar to a comprehensive upper school, and the year of transition (1973-4) when the school reached 1400 pupils, was difficult Nevertheless I look back fondly on my three y ears, and some of the members of staff were role models for me in my career, subsequently spent in Hong Kong. Donald Phelps was a great mentor for me (I became Deputy Head myself in 1989), but I also admired the likes of Harry Mirfin, Mike Bullock and David Swabey. I recall the two first form classes in my first year. 1L had two very bright girls: Judith Duce(?) and Annette Rathmell, and the the other had characters like Wendy Garrett and Debra Wilde (and Diane Dutton whose message I read - I am amazed she remembered me). Most of all WMS school gave me my wife of 33 years Melanie nee Boothroyd who was head girl 1974-5 and we have three children and one grandchild due in March.
I would like to visit the school during the celebrations of the centenary. And I would love to hear from any ex student who remembers me (and us).
Chris Forse: 1971-74
Honours for Heidi Mottram include the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and a BSC obtained from Hull University. Heidi left school and became a British Rail trainee following shortly after by the position of Station Master for Harrogate/Leeds City. She enjoyed various management postions with British Rail. After Privatisation she become involved in a Management role with G.N.E.R., M.M.L. and Arriva. More recently she became Managing Director Northern, and then appointed C.E.O. for Northumbrian Water 2010 and was awarded O.B.E in the New Years Honours list 2010. She has won many awards to the rail industry. Not bad for a previous Whitcliffian.

I started my first teaching job at Whitcliffe Mount in September 1972, the last year of the grammar school. That year, many of my lessons were punctuated with the sound of the sand blasting of the old building, but I loved it. Harry Mirfin was a great head of department and I enjoyed being involved in Games with Bruce Deadman and Brian Walker. I had some great groups in the main school and in the 6th form too, including Chris Forse's wife Melanie (Boothroyd). I especially liked the staff cricket fixtures and was always amazed at the amount of beer that Les Kaja could drink! Having moved back south, I lost contact with people but am pleased to see the school doing so well.
Michael Watson: 1972-1975
I attended Whitcliffe Mount from 1961-1968 in L stream. I had no nickname that I was aware of, but you never know!
Philip Nuttall: 1961-1968
