 Department Information - History

History is the study of people in the past. At Whitcliffe Mount School you will learn about all sorts of different people. You will learn why people acted in certain ways and what the consequences of their actions were. You will discover what it was like to be a soldier fighting in the trenches at the Western Front in World War One and why so many people voted for Hitler in Germany. You will learn what it was like to be a slave working on a plantation farm and why Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. You will also learn how to form judgements about people and events in the past and you will learn how to use evidence to back up your arguments.

The department follows the OCR Schools History Project syllabus and students are prepared to sit examinations in the following 2 units:
  • Germany: 1919-1945
  • Medicine Through Time
Students also do a Controlled Assessment piece on Global Terror.

History is a really interesting and enjoyable subject but it also teaches you skills that are highly valued by employers. You will learn how to analyse information and use evidence to form judgments about the past. You will also develop useful skills in investigation and communication.

You will discover what made people in the twentieth century think and do what they did and what the consequences of their actions were – not just for people at the time but also for us now.
