 Department Information - Maths

 
The department is housed mainly on the upper floor of the Foundation Building within a suite of rooms that provide good accommodation teaching facilities.

The department has interactive whiteboards in all classrooms and access to a wide number of computer suites throughout the school.

Examination results compare favourably with national averages at the end of both Key Stage 3 and 4.

Department Teaching Assistants
The department is supported by a number of teaching assistants who aid with pupil development and attainment.

Intervention
1/3 of Year 11 pupils receive a maths mentor to help achieve targets leading up to their GCSE maths exams. Also extra intervention classes are offered after school and during the Easter holidays.

Equipment
The department is well equipped with a variety of exciting and interactive learning tools. To support this all students are expected to come to lessons with the following:
  • Pen,
  • Pencil,
  • Ruler,
  • Calculator,
  • Protractor
  • and a Pair of Compasses.
 

 Curriculum Outline

 

Pupils are streamed for Mathematics with mainly whole-class teaching. At Key Stage 3, Year 7 and 8 use exclusively the "New Maths Frameworking (Collins)" books which are provided at three levels, tier 1, 2 and 3. Year 9 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE) pupils use "AQA Collins GCSE Higher & Foundation" books as their main resource.

Functional mathematics is also open to students following the Foundation and Higher linear course.

ICT
The department also utilises the latest mathematical software as an aide to making lessons more fun and varied. Many lessons now have an interactive element using the following software:

  • www.mymaths.co.uk (Individualised Learning).
  • SRS System (Class Leaning).
  • Mathswatch (Class & Individualised Learning).

Homework
Homework is set once a week either from provided homework books or from www.mymaths.co.uk online exercises.

 

 Extra Curricular

 
Enterprise in education includes knowledge and understanding of the world of work and career planning. It includes opportunities to engage in entrepreneurial activities as well as the development of enterprising attitudes and skills.
Enterprising attitudes and skills enable young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society throughout life and at work, with an informed sense of their roles in the world.
Studies in mathematics can help young people to become successful learners, confident, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society and at work.
Mathematics makes a major contribution to preparing young people for work through developing skills, most notably in numeracy and problem solving..
