| You have probably seen the adverts on TV over the past few months about twinning your school with another school to celebrate the 2012 Olympics.
We signed up last year and we have just been given our twin details;- The Zrenjanin Grammar School in Serbia & Montenegro
We will be sharing what we are planning with them. Watch out for updates on how they too are preparing for the Olympics. Exciting times!

| We are running a ski trip for the new pupils arriving at Whitcliffe
Mount. This will be a great way to make new friends early on at a new
school.
It will follow the same format, in the same resort, with the same
company, as the ski trips that have been run since 2003.
- Saas Fee is situated in the south west corner of Switzerland and is the second highest resort in Europe.
- Due to Saas Fee being a traffic-free village, we will be staying in the smaller neighbouring resort of Saas Grund, in a hotel called The Heino.
- The rooms are ensuite with 2/3 beds.
- There is a DVD projector room and table football in the hotel.
- Meals are excellent and home-cooked, and we will also have a night in the pizzeria.
- There are local activities such as ice skating, bowling, bobsleigh 'rollercoaster', tubing, ski trampolining demo, fireworks and disco, some of these are dependent upon snow/ice conditions.
For full details please check out the Extra Curricular Activities page.

| On Wednesday 25th January students from the Princes Trust invited the leader of 7th Spen Valley Scouts into school to present him with a cheque for £100.
The money had been raised by XL club members at their Christmas Coffee Morning in December 2011.
Scout leader Paul told the students that the money would be used to fund the purchase of two new camping stoves as they were vital pieces of equipment used on expeditions and hikes by Scout members.
Paul was delighted to receive the cheque and thanked the group on behalf of all the members of 7th Spen Valley who would benefit from their fundraising efforts.

| The first event we are planning is a 1-day event involving a vocal workshop for groups of students from both schools throughout the day, led by professional vocal coach Aaron Newland-Bentley. This will be followed by a performance for parents, peers and the community in the evening at one of the schools. The plan is then to repeat this at the other school.
This will be the first of, hopefully, many events shared by both schools.
This is a fantastic opportunity for students at Whitcliffe to work with students from another school on worthwhile projects - watch this space.

| On Tuesday the 10th of January, a group of Year 10 amateur radio enthusiasts from Whitcliffe were invited by DJ Al Kelly to visit the Real Radio studios in Leeds. After hovering in the doorway in an attempt to find out if their favourite Pop Star was hidden away in the building, students were given a full tour of the studios.
Students got to meet the man who creates the jingles (and got to hear some exclusive advertising jingles), then received information about how to create a variety of different sound effects used in the adverts. They were also able to meet a number of Real Radio DJs who were busy preparing for their next radio shows.
The highlight of the visit had to be the time in the radio studio where students were provided with expert guidance provided by DJ Al. It was quickly evident how much planning and skill goes into presenting a radio show as students struggled with impromptu presenting tasks; they explored the pitfalls of reading from a script and the issues with not knowing what to talk about before starting to speak.
Everyone really enjoyed the visit: Emily Hall said, “It was really good; we learned a lot. I want to look into doing work experience in a radio station now.” Abbie Webb was equally enthusiastic, “It was great. I got to sit in the DJ’s chair with earphones on and listen to myself as if I was on the radio.”
With students now preparing for a new school radio station, Whitcliffe Audio, I am sure that we will hear all the skills that students learnt from the experts as they present their very own radio shows. Good Luck to all the Whitcliffe radio presenters!

| Students, parents and staff gathered last night at school to celebrate the achievements of last year’s Sixth Formers. Each department in the school awarded prizes for Achievement and Effort and the students received their prizes on the stage from their subject staff. Katy Hall treated us to an outstanding performance of ‘Wherever you will go’ by Charlene Soraia and the students received their examination certificates. Miss Williams then presented the Aim Higher Award to Lauren Kerry and Mr McGee awarded the Overall Achievement Prize to Nathan King. After the ceremony, students and their guests joined the staff for refreshments in the Library and it was wonderful to find out how they are getting on at university and in their new careers. We are very proud of our last group of Sixth Formers and wish them every success for the future!
