Department Overview

The science department is located in the 3 story science block and in three laboratories in the new block.

The department consists of twelve full-time and one part-time teachers and is supported by three full-time technicians.

Courses

Year 9
There are two pathways being offered in Yr 9. The pathway followed is determined by the performance in science at middle school.

Pathway 1 (Fast Track)
On this pathway pupils will study for and sit the first module test at Core Science GCSE. They complete the year by studying for a second Core Science GCSE module.

Pathway 2 (Regular)
On this pathway pupils spend two terms studying the 12 topics in the KS3 curriculum. They will then study for a Core Science GCSE module.

Year 10
Again there are two pathways in Yr 10. The one followed will depend on the pupils SAT results.

Pathway 1 (Core Science)
On this pathway pupils will study the six modules needed to attain a GCSE in Core Science. This will also involve practising and carrying out the practical part called ISAs

Pathway 2 (Entry Level Science)
These pupils will study the Core Science modules but usually at a more appropriate pace for the pupils involved. This pathway is designed to allow all pupils to attain a GCSE in Core Science over the two years.

Year 11
In Year 11 there are three pathways available. The one followed depends on performance in Yr 10.

Pathway 1 (Additional Science)
This pathway will be followed by the most successful science pupils. Most will study the three modules needed to attain a GCSE in Additional Science. Many will additionally study the three further modules need to attain GCSEs in the three separate sciences.

Pathway 2 (Additional Applied Science)
This pathway will be followed by pupils capable of attaining a C grade in science who otherwise would possibly not succeed. The course is 60% coursework and the modules studied are closely related to everyday experiences which will hopefully stimulate a greater interest amongst the pupils.

Pathway 3 (Core/ Additional Science)
This is the pathway followed by the entry level pupils. It is designed to allow all pupils to complete the Core Science GCSE. It is hoped that many of these pupils would also study the Additional Science modules in order to successfully complete this course.

Year 12
Currently AS levels are available in the three science subjects, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Please see the "Sixth Form" section of the website.

Year 13
Currently A2 modules are available in the sciences to allow them to convert AS levels into full A levels.

Again these options will change in time for those students completing AS modules in Summer 2009  Please see the "Sixth Form" section of the website.
