Work Experience
At Whitcliffe Mount all students in Year 10 take part in work experience during the two weeks prior to Easter. This year (2010-11) students will be on placement between Monday 4th April and Friday 15th April 2010.
A schedule of thorough preparation, support and debriefing is in place to guide students through work experience. Further details will follow shortly.
If you have any questions about Work Experience, please contact Mr McKirgan (pictured) by email to workexperience@whitcliffemount.co.uk or by phone on 01274 335182.
Students can also make comments or ask questions via the Work Experience Discussion forum on e-Cliffe.
What Is Work Experience?
- A placement at a local company or industry for up to 2 weeks;
- An opportunity to experience the world of work and guide your career choices;
- Part of the National Curriculum
- It is not just a chance to sample a job.
Why Do Work Experience?
- It gives you the chance to see how a local company works;
- To see how working with adults compares to working in school;
- To help focus your future;
- To see if school skills help you in the world of work;
- A chance to develop new skills;
- It looks good on your CV or when you go for a college or job interview.
How Does It Work?
The Application Form
- Decide whether you are going to make a Private Arrangement or if you are going to accept a Designated Placement;
- Fill in the form (see guidance notes available on e-Cliffe), sign it yourself and get your parents to sign it;
The Process
- Application forms must be returned to school no later than Friday 27th November;
- Teacher comments added and forms sent to C&K Careers;
- C&K Careers arrange placements and perform health & safety and insurance checks.
Notification
- 3 weeks prior to the start of your placement you will receive your Job Description with details of your placement;
- You must then contact your employer to introduce yourself and arrange an interview if necessary.
The Placement
- Everything you need to know about your placement will be on the Job Description you receive before you start your placement;
- It will be your responsibility to make your own way to and from the placement by any means available (walk, bus, train, taxi etc).
