Geography

Brief Outline

Geography addresses key ideas and debates in our world today, such as climate change, globalisation, urban regeneration, responses to hazards and management of the world’s resources. Students will explore a range of issues and examine potential solutions to them. Debate current issues especially the impacts and possible ways people can adapt to Global Warming.

Fieldwork and research are key features of the syllabus. Students will visit a UK based field centre to carry out geographical research at AS and visit a European centre at A2.

Methods of Teaching

Lessons, decision making exercises, field work, presentations from outside organisations e.g. The Met Office and The Environment Agency.  Video/DVD’s, and topical newspaper articles.

Global Challenges: World at Risk & Going Global (60% of AS mark 1hour 30 mins).

 Unit 2  Geographical Investigations: Extreme Weather & Unequal Spaces (40% of AS mark 1hour exam).
A2  
Unit 3

Contested Planet: Six compulsory topics Energy security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity Under Threat, Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap, The Technological Fix? (60% of A2 mark 2 hours 30 mins).

 Unit 4  Geographical Research: Students choose a topic from six choices (40% of A2 mark 1 hour 30 mins exam).

What We Expect From You

An interest in what is happening in the world around you. 5 GCSE’s at grade C including English language. Good attendance and punctuality. Commitment to geography, a willingness to work hard, independently, make notes, conduct research and meet deadlines.

Future Prospects

The job market for geographers has never been better with constantly changing environments the skills you learn are very marketable. Possible career paths include Conservation management, The Environment Agency, Coastal management, climate change, Town Planning, Field work teaching and many more.
