History

Brief Outline

The specification focuses on the nature of historical study.  Unit 1 (As) - a study of historical explanation based on an indepth study of 'Russia in turmoil', 1900-21.  A period of revolution replacing Tsars with communism.  Unit 2 (AS) - a study in the use of historical souces based on protest and government responses in Britain, 1780's - 1880's.  Unt 3 (A2) - Historical controversy studied through debates on the Holocaust.  Unit 4 (A2) - Historical significance studied through a question devised by the student on an aspect on modern British history.

Methods of Teaching

Lessons will consist of a wide range of activities including overview lectures.  Student presentation, paired and group activities, discussion of responses to source based questions, class debates and individual tutorials on the personal study.  Students will be expected to undertake extensive reading and notemaking in their own time to answer source questions and write essays.  An opportunity to visit Poland, including Auschwitz and other holocaust related sites will be provided every other year.

1.5 hour source based paper.  50% of AS, 25% of A level

Controlled task, 3 hours, with books, notes etc.  60 marks. 30% of A level.
Personal study of 3000 words in own time.  40 marks, 20% of A level

What We Expect From You

At least a grade C in GCSE History or a Humanities subject or English if history not taken at GCSE.  A willingness to undertake regular independent study - reading and notemaking are vital to success.

Future Prospects

This is an excellent preparation for History at university.  History is also a highly regarded academic discipline which is a good basis for higher education in general as well a a good preparation for professional life.
