Brief Outline
BTEC National awards are qualifications that are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of areas.
On successful completion of a BTEC National students will have obtained an equivalent A-C grade at A-Level. Students can then progress into employment or continue their studies at university.
A BTEC National award comprises of 6 separate units in any of the following pathways:
-
Performance
-
Composition
-
Musical Theatre
-
Music Technology
Students can choose one or two pathways, therefore obtaining one or two BTEC National Awards.
The main difference between an A level course and the BTEC National course is there are no exams, the award is project/coursework based.
BTEC National awards (similar to BTEC First - equivalent GCSE) are graded as PASS, MERIT and DISTINCTION (equivalent E, C and A respectively). To obtain a PASS you will need to obtain a PASS in all 6 units for a pathway. To obtain a MERIT you will need to obtain a MERIT in all 6 units for a pathway. To obtain a DISTINCTION you will need to obtain a DISTINCTION in all 6 units for a pathway.
In every pathway and unit the criteria for PASS, MERIT and DISTINCTION will be made clear throughout the course.
Future Prospects
Universities recognize this qualification as long as students achieve 2 merits and 1 distinction within the pathway they choose to study. Universities also require students to obtain ABRSM grade 5 theory, which is also covered as part of this course.
