Whitcliffe Values and Ethos

Enjoy - Achieve - Celebrate

The school’s ethos of “Enjoy, Achieve, Celebrate” is clearly evident throughout school life. Once students arrive at Whitcliffe Mount they become a member of a form group with a form tutor, who is the first point of contact – they will get to know your child and support them – we see the form as a family – students and staff work together, supporting each other. The form tutors are led by an Achievement Leader and Year Leader who are key in further developing our partnerships between school, students and home.

Students are also a member of a larger family through our House System – we have 5 houses and there are many opportunities for students to earn house points by entering a range of house competitions. These include ‘designing a school Christmas card’ to the drama showcase to the French Spelling bee to my personal favourite - house dodge-ball!

We know it is important that students enjoy their education – if they are happy, then we are happy! We promote hard work, good behaviour, respect for each other and ultimately students being the best they can be.

A real strength of the school is the range of extra-curricular activities the students experience during their time with us. Every day there are a variety of clubs: sports activities, music, drama, art, fashion, Minecraft, Duke of Edinburgh, The Achieve Programme and the list goes on … Alongside there is an extensive visits programme, in the last two years our students visited Oxford University, France, Spain, London, Iceland, Poland and even a visit to Disneyland Paris to do some maths!

Getting the curriculum right is vital for literacy and numeracy development. These are the building blocks for later success, however preparing our students with a range of skills for the future is also critical. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, embedded into this, our students also develop their ‘We are Whitcliffe’ skills and a comprehensive business engagement and careers programme.

To enable us to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum we have great facilities, in our fantastic new building with specialist computing rooms, technology workshops, food rooms, science labs, drama and dance studios and so on; with of course specialist teachers to help students achieve their very best.  When visiting our school tonight we hope you see how these new facilities will further enhance student opportunities.

A major advantage of these specialist teachers and facilities is that when students start to choose their options we can offer a superb range, at present students have 25 different courses – from French and Spanish, to History and Geography, PE, Drama, Music, Business, Health and Social Care, media to engineering!

However, facilities and the curriculum are only part of the story, over the past 5 years, looking at a variety of measures – student achievement has improved on the whole. One of our major achievements is that in the last three years every single student left with at least one qualification, 97% left with five and this summer 55% achieved the new grade 4 plus, in English and Maths. 13% of students earned themselves an amazing three or more grades at A/A* (or equivalent), with 63% 4+ in Maths and 70% 4+ in English – I think that this demonstrates that we are truly inclusive.

Our extensive Student Leadership Academy is an area of school life we are particularly proud of.  The Academy comprises of buddies for Year 7, Reading Leaders, Student Ambassadors, Sports and Dance Leaders and our Prefect team led by the Head Boy and Head Girl.  As we moved into our new building our student leaders have used their skills to help us all settle in quickly and find our way around!

Only two weeks after moving into our new building, Ofsted came for a visit! The letter we received this week demonstrates that, despite the distractions of a building project, the school has maintained its relentless focus on continual improvement and ensuring each and every student has the opportunity and support they need, in order to be the best that they can possibly be, both academically and as responsible members of the community.

This most recent endorsement of the school’s performance and progress marks a key milestone on our journey from good to great and it also provides the perfect platform from which we can move forward. It’s an exciting new era for Whitcliffe Mount School in our incredible new facilities.

Four years on from joining Whitcliffe Mount I am incredibly proud of our students and everything they participate in. We have huge ambitions for every child and I would keep you here all night if I listed everything we offer! We want our students to have every opportunity to shine, to be the best they can be and we want to celebrate these successes every step of the way! We will work them hard, challenge them to reach for the stars but at the same time support and encourage them on their journey from Year 7 to Year 11.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
