Physical Education

The Physical Education Department consists of eleven dedicated members of staff, ten of which are fully qualified teachers who are committed to the sporting development of all students.

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Students receive four hours of high quality PE over a two week cycle. The PE curriculum is extremely broad & diverse with students studying traditional Games activities, as well as, Gymnastics, Dance, and Athletics. In Year 7, students are taught in single gender and mixed ability groups. Whilst in Years 8 and 9 groups are organised by ability. Assessments are also carried out for each activity studied.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage Four, students still receive four hours of high quality PE over a two week cycle The curriculum is again broad and diverse, expanding on knowledge and skills learnt in KS3 focusing on Games, Dance and Athletics. The department is continually striving to offer a range of new and different activities in order to maximise participation and enjoyment. Physical Education can provide a valuable release from the increasing pressures and demands of examinations and coursework.

GCSE PE

Examination courses are a key feature in the department and the PE qualifications delivered are reviewed on an annual basis, depending on the needs of the cohort.

OCR Sports Science

OCR Science and Sport Studies Specification

The specification contains information regarding the course content; the compulsory units we have to deliver and the optional units which we can choose two from.

The units we have chosen as a school are:

R041 - Reducing the risk of sports injury (25%) - EXAM - COMPULSORY

R042 - Applying principles of training (25%) - COURSEWORK - COMPULSORY

R045 - Sports Nutrition (25%) - COURSEWORK

R046 - Technology in sport (25%) - COURSEWORK

Students will study the course from Year 10 over two years, with five hours of lessons over a two week timetable. The majority of lessons are made up of theory, some practical sessions are included dependent on the unit of work being taught. Students will learn specification content in lessons and then will be given an assignment brief to work from in order to complete their coursework.

PE Kit

The department has a clear and simple policy regarding the wearing of suitable PE kit. Please click on the link below to see the policy in detail.

After School Clubs

Extra-curricular provision is a major strength of the school. A significant number of students represent the school in a wide range of sports, playing against other schools both locally and regionally. Teams are represented in football (girls and boys), basketball (girls and boys), rugby union (girls and boys), netball, Badminton, rounders, cricket, and athletics. An increasing number of students perform at a very high level in their chosen sports; some participate at national level. Other activities are offered on a recreational level; these include fitness, gymnastics, dance and cheerleading.

A large number of students are now actively involved in Sports Leadership. As part of the Coaching, Leadership and Enterprise Academy, students deliver after school sports sessions in our local primary schools. Students develop a wide range of skills through leadership that they can use later in life, including communication, organisation, awareness of health and safety, fair play, etc. Students can gain qualifications in Sports Leadership as the department delivers the nationally recognised Sports Leaders UK courses in both sport, and dance.

The department organises a range of inter-house competitions where students can represent their house in a range of sporting activities. Our biggest house competitions are our annual sports days, where we use both the schools facilities and Princess Marys running track in Liversedge, to host a highly competitive athletics event.

The school has been actively involved in the RFU All Schools programme for the last five years and as a result the numbers of students, both boys and girls, playing rugby union has increased dramatically. Our relationship with Cleckheaton RUFC continues to be strong.

VIBE Rugby Player Development Pathway

The school with the support of the Rugby Football Union and Cleckheaton RFU is offering a pathway that looks at developing students around all aspects of rugby. The pathway will offer the students the chance to not only develop as rugby players but also as leader’s and referee’s, gaining qualifications in both of these other areas. This pathway is open to Year 8 students who have to apply and go through an interview process to be accepted on the course.

The department holds an Annual Sports Presentation Evening where the sporting success of the students is celebrated. This is always a very successful evening and the department invites ex-students who have become professional sportsmen and women to present the awards.

Enrichment

In addition to the vast extra-curricular sports/dance programme, the Department also organises trips to a variety of events.

For example : Football (Manchester United), Rugby Union (Sale Sharks), Cricket (Yorkshire CCC), National Cycling Centre (taster sessions on Velodrome, BMX and MTB tracks), Football/Netball Tours (Barcelona). Ski/Snowboard (East Coast America)
