Opportunity to Join Police Cadets

Later this month, recruitment will be open for young people to apply for a position on Cohort 5 of the Volunteer Police Cadets.

Each district will have at least one unit with the Kirklees unit based at Dewsbury and parading each Wednesday during term time between 6pm and 8pm. In addition, the Cadet Unit attends Parades, Galas and other events at various times through the year to support NPTs and other department to deliver Policing in support of our communities, these are usually at weekends and during school holidays.

The Volunteer Police Cadets operates in every force across England & Wales.

We welcome potential Cadets from any background, social group, gender, ethnicity, ability / disability and whether you have an interest in the police or not.

We also welcome young people who may have previously been in trouble with the Police or may feel some disconnection with their peers and community.

We are not looking to recruit future police officers, but want to give all young people a chance to be heard, support their community and develop skills to become fantastic citizens in a fun, friendly and exciting way. The programme is obviously quite Police-centric with talks and visits from various specialist departments, but there are lots of transferable skills from these inputs.

There is nothing else like the VPC - it is a unique experience for young people to become part of the policing family for many years.

In West Yorkshire the scheme runs a 2 year programme during which we fund their completion of the Duke of Edinburgh programme at both Bronze and Silver levels. Cohort 5 will begin in September at the start of the academic year and at its conclusion, many Cadets stay as Senior Cadets until they reach 18 when they have the option of becoming Police Support Volunteers in a variety of roles, applying to become Special Constables or joining the force as Police Officers, PCSOs or support staff members.

The scheme is staffed by Police Officers, Police Staff and Volunteers who are all vetted and trained in safeguarding to agreed national levels.

Applications to join the scheme will be found online at from 15th April. The form is very basic and covers only eligibility criteria.

Successful applicants will be invited to attend an Assessment Day, where they will take part in tasks to test their Teamwork and Communication skills. We are expecting a high number of applicants, so this will be their chance to show us how great they are!

To Join the scheme the young person must be:

  1. Aged between 13 and 17 on 2nd September 2024.
  1. In Year 9 or above on 2nd September 2024.
  1. Resident in Kirklees (Applicants may be taken from other districts dependant on circumstances IE – Attend school in Kirklees)
  1. Not have completed either Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award with another provider.
  1. If they have registered on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme with another provider they must consent to their membership being transferred over to the Volunteer Police Cadet scheme.
  1. Available to attend parade evenings each Wednesday between 6pm and 8 pm during term time. This is likely to be at Dewsbury Minster, Dewsbury Town Centre – it is directly opposite Dewsbury Bus Station and a short walk from Dewsbury Train Station.
  1. Have consent from parent or guardian.

Individuals can apply themselves or there will be an option for a 3rd party referral to be made on behalf of a young person.

Numbers will be strictly restricted to 25 and the application window will be open initially for 2 weeks, closing at 9am on Monday 29th April.

If anybody has any questions or would like to know more about becoming a police cadet or a leader in the scheme please contact myself by email, or the unit leader PS Stuart Clarke on

Sparks Homework Resource

This equates to, on average, 40 minutes per student per week of independent work outside of lessons since we launched the online homework!  This is a fantastic achievement.  Students are reporting to us that doing their online Maths homework is helping them with the work in lessons and that they are therefore enjoying the subject more. Thank you for supporting your child in completing their Maths homework.

Last half term, the Maths department issued lunch queue jump passes to those students who had been consistently completing their homework to a high standard. As a department, we will continue to reward points to allow students to earn certificates and other incentives in the future.

Please continue to encourage students to complete their homework before the deadline every Wednesday.  The computer room 235 is available after school every Monday with a Maths teacher on hand if any students would like to complete their homework.
