Life at Whitcliffe Mount School

What a great start to the week we have had... 110 years ago a time capsule was buried under the foundations of Whitcliffe Mount and on Monday 9th July 2018, WE FOUND IT! Thank you Laing O'Rouke and Thomas Crompton who invited us to see if we could find the Time Capsule from 1908!! It wasn't quite in one piece but a fantastic piece of Whitcliffe history nonetheless.

After the re-discovery of the time capsule buried when Whitcliffe was founded in 1909, it quickly became apparent that the documents enclosed in it needed some expert attention!

The Conservation team at the West Yorkshire Archive Service have taken on the task of cleaning and preserving the local and national newspapers and town council documents which were enclosed in a large glass jar. Due to the passage of time, the documents have become damp, but the conservators are generally pleased with the condition of the paper, and are confident that with some care the items will be around for many years to come.

It is hoped that after the conservation process has been completed, the time capsule contents can be put on display in the special cabinets installed in the Visitors’ Entrance.
